2025 MdPHA Annual Event Highlights On Thursday, December 11, 2025, the Maryland Public Health Association hosted its 2025 Annual Event, Community Voices, Collective Action: Advancing Health Equity Together, at Bowie State University. The evening featured a dynamic conversation with Dr. Georges C. Benjamin, Executive Director of the American Public Health Association, and Dr. Anita Mwalui, Founder and CEO of Community Engagement & Consultation Group Inc. Dr. Benjamin shared insights drawn from decades of national public health leadership, reflecting on the role of policy, infrastructure, and leadership in advancing population health. As Executive Director of APHA and former Maryland Secretary of Health, Dr. Benjamin brings extensive expertise in health policy and systems strengthening. He is board-certified in internal medicine, a member of the National Academy of Medicine, and serves on numerous nonprofit boards focused on advancing public health and infrastructure security nationwide. Dr. Mwalui offered a community-centered perspective on advancing health equity through research, practice, and culturally responsive engagement. With over 15 years of experience in public health, she has led initiatives addressing social determinants of health, chronic disease prevention, maternal and child health, and mental and behavioral health. Dr. Mwalui holds a Doctoral Degree in Public Health Research, along with advanced training in applied behavior analysis, epidemiology, and health systems management. As CEO and Executive Director of Community Engagement & Consultation Group Inc., she emphasizes evidence-based, participatory approaches that elevate community voices while aligning research, policy, and sustainable practice. Together, the speakers highlighted the importance of collective action, community engagement, and cross-sector collaboration in addressing persistent health disparities and building healthier, more equitable communities. The event provided meaningful opportunities for dialogue, networking, and shared learning among public health professionals, students, and community leaders committed to advancing health equity across Maryland and beyond. 2024 MdPHA Annual Event Highlights On November 21, 2024, we had the privilege of hosting a dynamic annual event featuring Dr. Georges C. Benjamin, Executive Director of the American Public Health Association, and Dr. Kisha N. Davis, County Health Officer for Montgomery County, MD. Dr. Benjamin shared his expertise on national public health leadership, while Dr. Davis discussed strategies for advancing health equity and improving community health. The event provided valuable insights into the critical role of leadership in strengthening public health infrastructure and addressing health disparities. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this impactful discussion! Dr. Georges C. Benjamin is the executive director of the American Public Health Association and former Maryland Secretary of Health. A leader in health policy, he is board-certified in internal medicine and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Benjamin serves on numerous nonprofit boards, advancing public health and infrastructure security across the nation. Dr. Kisha N. Davis is a family physician and County Health Officer for Montgomery County, MD. With expertise in health equity and public health, she has held key roles including Vice Chair of MACPAC and Vice President of Health Equity at Aledade. 2023 MdPHA Annual Conference Highlights On Tuesday, November 28th, 2023, MdPHA hosted its annual event! This year's theme was "Restoring Trust in Public Health" and our speakers included: Dr. Laura Scott, Secretary of Health for the Maryland Department of Health. A healthcare leader with expertise across decades in integrating value-based care philosophy with clinical and population health strategies, Dr. Scott served as Executive Vice President of Population Health at Summit Health and as Vice President of Clinical Strategy and Product at Anthem. She is also a veteran of the United States Army Reserves, serving from 1998-2008 as a Major in the Medical Corps. Ella Greene-Moton, President-Elect for the American Public Health Association. With an extensive background in Public Health Advocacy, Public Health Policy, Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), and programming, Ms. Greene-Moton has over 40 years of experiences working in and around Flint, Michigan and has worked to elevate the community voice and advocate for community inclusiveness at both the national and state levels. Dr. Gregory Branch, Director & Health Officer for the Baltimore County Department of Health & Human Services. Having served as Baltimore County Health Officer for more than 16 years and over 20 years in the medical field as an internist, Dr. Branch is well-versed in the various health challenges of Marylanders. Dr. Branch was on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic in Baltimore and continues to passionately advocate for the Baltimore community.
